BIG HOLE BATTLEFIELD A drive to the scenic upper Big Hole Valley through the fabled Montana ranch country is always a pleasurable day. In the town of Wisdom, you will discover a beautiful western art gallery. Just out of Wisdom, you can view a slide show (National Park Service) of the historic Battle of the Nez Perce Indians at the Chief Joseph battleground. The Nez Perce tribe were instrumental in guiding and feeding the Lewis and Clark Expedition during the last leg of their journey to the Pacific.
BANNACK STATE PARK A short drive from Wisdom will take you to Bannack, the former territorial capital of Montana. It is the best-preserved "ghost town" in the state and there is a wealth of western history to be learned there, including the tale of Sheriff Plummer and his gang of outlaws. On the way back to the lodge, you can drive through the magnificent Beaverhead National Forest and Pioneer Mountains and dig for crystals at an authorized location managed by the Forest Service.
HIGH COUNTRY DISCOVERY TOURS If you are looking for a non-fishing activity consider exploring Southwestern Montana with High Country Discovery tours. Your guide is Catherine Cain, a professional naturalist. Guided day tours are tailored to fit your interests - be it photography, wildflowers, birds or historical sites. Travel the back roads of this vast Big Sky country and visit pioneer ghost towns or mining trails where you can dig for quartz crystals. Follow in the path of the Lewis & Clark expedition from the Beaverhead Rock to Lemhi Pass where they crossed the Continental Divide into the Columbia River drainage. Transportation and a gourmet lunch are provided for all tours. Day hikes are available upon request. Visit High Country Discovery for more information
OLD WORKS GOLF COURSE Another option is the "Old Works" Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus. It was rated as one of the ten best new and affordable public golf courses in the country when constructed several years ago. The Scottish links style 18-hole layout is very affordable at $50 per round with cart, and there is excellent fishing near the course. Nicklaus is particularly proud of his achievement here since he and his design company reclaimed a historic copper smelting area into a world class golf course.
THE 19TH HOLE AT OLD WORKS Craig and most of his guides are avid golfers and would enjoy the opportunity to "play a round" after a morning of wade fishing on the nearby Clark Fork River. The upper Clark Fork River is very similar to the Ruby River in size and habitat, and is primarily a Brown Trout fishery with good hatches of mayflies and caddis.
MOOSE MEADOWS GOLF COURSE There is a 100-yd. Par 3 hole on the lodge property for those who'd like to sharpen their skills after dinner. Due to the occasional Moose that grazes onto the green and the tracks that they leave, there are no gimmies.
